The People
Behind.
Every Flensted Mobile begins in a Danish home.
For more than seventy years, our mobiles have been assembled by hand in private homes across the island of Funen. While much of the world's production has moved to large factories, we have chosen a different path — one built on trust, craftsmanship and long-lasting relationships.
It all began with a knock on a neighbour's door.
When Christian and Grethe Flensted needed an extra pair of hands, they knocked on their neighbour's door. That single knock became a tradition that today spans three generations, dozens of families, and homes across the island of Funen.
Every mobile is created through many hands.
From the first sketch to the final quality check, every Flensted Mobile passes through many careful hands. Each person contributes their own knowledge, craftsmanship and care. We'd like to introduce you to some of them.
The Designers.
Not every idea becomes a mobile. For us, a mobile should be more than beautiful. It should create a feeling. For more than seventy years, designing mobiles has been part of the Flensted family. Today, father and daughter — Ole and Christine Kit Flensted — continue that tradition, each bringing their own perspective and ideas to the collection.
Alongside the family, we are fortunate to collaborate with more than twenty designers from Denmark and around the world. Some bring fresh perspectives, while others have been part of the Flensted story for generations. Together, we create a collection in which every mobile has its own character and story.
Turning an idea into a mobile is a process of sketching, testing, refining and, sometimes, starting all over again. Some designs come together in months. Others take years. One of our mobiles took 15 years from idea to finished mobile.
From the very first sketch, we think not only about how a mobile should look and move, but also about how it will be made — ensuring that each mobile can be assembled by the families who will later bring it to life in their homes across Funen.
The Production Team.
Once a new mobile is ready, the work is far from over. Working closely with the designers, our production team transforms an idea into something that can be crafted by hand without compromising the designer's vision.
Every practical detail must now be carefully considered. From choosing the right materials and preparing each individual component, to creating clear assembly instructions and designing a safe "home" for the finished mobile — because the box is more than just packaging.
We're proud that so much of this work still takes place here at Frederiksminde. Many of the components are still die-cut in-house on our Heidelberg presses, while countless other details are carefully prepared by the team before the mobile ever leaves for one of our homeworking families.
The Homeworkers.
Across the island of Funen, a tradition continues behind front doors that look much like any other.Step inside, however, and you may discover a room dedicated entirely to assembling Flensted Mobiles. For many families, this is more than a place to work. It has become part of their home.
Some work side by side as husband and wife. Others are mothers and daughters who share the craft across generations. Some are retired, others are nurses, teachers or craftspeople who enjoy the quiet rhythm of working with their hands alongside everyday life.
Every workspace is carefully maintained — smoke-free and free from pets — to ensure that every mobile reaches its new home in perfect condition. When the carefully prepared materials arrive from Frederiksminde, the work begins. One thread at a time, one piece at a time, one mobile at a time.
Back at Frederiksminde.
Once a mobile has been carefully assembled, it returns home. This is where our Quality & Logistics Team takes over. Every mobile is welcomed back, carefully spot-checked and prepared for the next stage of its journey.
Working quietly behind the scenes, the team prepares and packs everything needed for the families across Funen to assemble each mobile. They receive the completed mobiles as they return, keep the warehouse running smoothly, carry out quality checks and carefully prepare every order before it leaves Frederiksminde.
Every step matters. Together, they make sure that every mobile leaves Frederiksminde ready for the next chapter of its journey.
The Invisible Hands.
Not all craftsmanship can be seen. Not all hands assemble a mobile. Some keep the business running by managing finances, planning production, coordinating purchasing and deliveries, supporting customers and business partners, answering emails, taking phone calls or welcoming visitors to Frederiksminde.
In a small family business, very few people have just one role. A typical day might begin with a meeting about a new design, continue with a phone call from Japan, a homeworker stopping by to collect materials, or a retailer in the South of France needing help with a price list.
It is all part of making everything else possible. Behind every Flensted Mobile are many people who, every day, help keep this tradition alive.
Sending Danish craftsmanship into the world.
Every day, our Sales & Marketing Team works to bring our mobiles to people around the world. They collaborate with retailers, agents, distributors, architects, museums, hotels and private customers — and help our mobiles find their way to new homes.
They also help preserve and document the many stories that surround Flensted Mobiles. The stories of the people, the craftsmanship and Frederiksminde — everything that, over generations, has helped shape the company we are today.
Today, Flensted Mobiles can be found in more than 80 countries and in over 800 stores worldwide. No matter where in the world a Flensted Mobile ends up, it always carries a small piece of Denmark with it.
A New Home.
By the time a Flensted Mobile arrives in its new home, it has already passed through many careful hands. A sketch became a plan. A plan became a set of instructions. Instructions became the quiet work of many hands — in studios, workshops and homes across Funen.
Some hang in family homes, others in museums, hospitals, hotels, restaurants and workplaces. Although every destination is different, every mobile carries the same story with it — a story that began with curiosity, was shaped by many hands and assembled with care in a home on the island of Funen.
And perhaps that is the most remarkable part. No matter where in the world a Flensted Mobile ends up, it always carries a small piece of Denmark with it.
It may be slower.
It is worth it.
We believe that our mobiles carry a part of the people who created them. Not something you can measure or see, but something you can feel.
People often ask why we haven't moved our production abroad. The answer is simple.
We believe that our mobiles carry a part of the people who created them. Not something you can measure or see, but something you can feel. They carry the time, care and craftsmanship of the people who have held them in their hands. We believe that this becomes part of the mobile itself.
By keeping our production close, we are able to preserve the quality, flexibility and craftsmanship that have defined Flensted Mobiles for generations. Just as importantly, it allows us to preserve a way of working that has become part of who we are.
It may be slower. It may be more complicated. But for us, it is worth preserving.
Perhaps what surprises the people around us most is that this tradition is still growing. Every now and then, we receive an email or a phone call from someone asking if they can become a part of the team that assembles our mobiles from their own home. We never take that interest for granted.
To us, it is a reminder that, even in a fast-moving world, there are still people who value working with their hands and who wish to become part of a long-standing Danish craft tradition.
Become part of
a living tradition.
If you live on the island of Funen in Denmark and would like to become part of this tradition one day, you are very welcome to add your name to our waiting list.
"Some traditions survive because they are protected. Others survive because people still wish to be part of them."
Because many of these people stay with us for years — and often across generations — opportunities rarely become available. For that reason, we keep a waiting list.
