At Flensted Mobiles, we believe that what we surround ourselves with shape the way we live. Soft light shining through a window. Something gently floating in the air. A moment of calm in the rhythm of everyday life. Sometimes, it is the smallest movements that bring the greatest sense of balance.

Since 1953, we have created mobiles — handmade in Denmark — with the wish of bringing exactly that feeling into homes around the world: a sense of movement and balance, and a sense of connection to the present.

How it all began

A knock on the
neighbour's door.

Our story began when Christian and Grethe Flensted created the very first mobile as a gift for their daughter's christening. It was two paper storks suspended from pieces of straw, moving gently in the air above the child's cradle. The family called them the "Lucky Storks", and without knowing it, Christian and Grethe Flensted had taken the first step towards what would later become Flensted Mobiles. They assembled all mobiles themselves in the beginning, but as they couldn't keep up with their friend's requests for mobiles, they had to knock on the neighbours door to hear if she would be open to helping them assemble more mobiles, and thus, the idea of "homeworkers" was born.

Flensted mobiles craftsmanship

Handmade with care at Frederiksminde, Funen — just as it has been since 1953.

It began as something deeply human.

A young couple with their hands in the soil and a dream of a simple life close to family, the garden, and what they could create with their own hands. The mobiles quietly emerged alongside the vegetable garden — as a small extra income for everyday life and household bills. Something created with hands, heart, and imagination.

Perhaps that is precisely why our mobiles still find their way into people's lives generation after generation.

Today, Flensted Mobiles is carried forward by the third generation of the family. Over the years, each generation has left its own mark on the company, yet what has united us all is the wish to create something that lasts — both physically and emotionally. Something that can be passed down. Something you will remember.

We often hear stories from people who grew up with a Flensted mobile in their home, and who now see that very same mobile hanging in the homes of their own children or grandchildren. Those stories mean more to us than we can express. Because they remind us that what we create are not simply design objects. They become part of people's lives, homes, and memories.

Handmade Danish design

Every Flensted mobile is still handmade in Denmark by skilled homeworkers who continue a tradition shaped by patience, care, and craftsmanship. We believe that something created by human hands carries a special warmth and quiet energy that gently becomes part of the homes, memories, and everyday lives our mobiles move into.

Through Three Generations

Since 1953, Flensted Mobiles has been passed from one generation to the next, always guided by the same love for movement, imagination, and thoughtful design. What began as a small family dream in Denmark continues today with deep respect for our heritage, our craftsmanship, and the tradition we proudly carry forward through each new generation.

Movement & Balance

Our mobiles respond gently to the air around them. A small breeze. An open door. The warmth of sunlight in a room. They move through the air, as quiet reminders that calm and movement can co-exist. That balance is something we shape little by little throughout life. And that even the smallest movement can make a difference.

"We often hear stories from people who grew up with a Flensted mobile in their home, and who now see that very same mobile hanging in the homes of their own children or grandchildren. Those stories mean more to us than we can express."

Movement & atmosphere

Calm does not
mean standing still.

The movement within our mobiles is intended as something more than movement alone. Movement is about atmosphere. About imagination. About creating small pauses in a world that often moves too quickly.

Our mobiles respond gently to the air around them. A small breeze. An open door. The warmth of sunlight in a room. They drift and turn quietly, reminding us that calm does not necessarily mean standing still. That balance is not something we find once and for all, but something we create again and again throughout life.

Perhaps that is why so many people describe our mobiles as calming. In children's rooms, living rooms, offices, and institutions, these small moving worlds often become a place the eye naturally wanders to in search of a quiet moment. We believe that good design should be felt more than explained.

All of our mobiles are still handmade in Denmark. Surrounded by fields, trees, and open skies in the landscape of the island Funen lies Frederiksminde — our family home through generations and still the heart of the company today. From here, mobiles are sent out into the world, yet our way of working has never fundamentally changed. We still believe in the value of patience, care, and craftsmanship. We believe in the idea that what we surround ourselves with carry a special warmth when they are created by human hands.

The people behind every mobile

Crafted with
hands and heart

It means a great deal to us that work can adapt to people's lives, rather than the other way around.

Homeworkers assembling Flensted mobiles

Our mobiles are still assembled by homeworkers across Funen. It all began in the 1950s when demand of the mobiles grew, and Christian and Grethe asked a neighbour for help assembling mobiles. That knock on a neighbour's door slowly grew into a community of people who, through three generations, have helped bring movement and balance into the world.

Many of our homeworkers have been part of Flensted Mobiles for decades. Several work side by side with their spouse in the calm surroundings of their own home. For some, the work has become a quiet rhythm in everyday life — a moment of immersion and calm where the hands are occupied while the mind is free to wander.

When something is made with care, it can be felt, and we work from an ambitious wish that our mobiles should last for at least three generations — something many of them have already proven they can. Not because everything should last forever, but because we believe in the value of objects that are cared for and lived with over time.

In a world where so much is created to be replaced quickly, we try to follow a different path. We do not work with fast trends or seasonal collections that disappear after only a few months. Several of our designs from the 1950s are still among our bestsellers today and continue to spread movement and balance in homes all over the world. To us, this is a sign that timeless design emerges when something is created with love and balance rather than haste.

Care & responsibility

Crafted to keep.

We also try to take responsibility for the resources we use. We choose our materials thoughtfully and continuously work to reduce waste and unnecessary consumption in both production and packaging. Our packaging is designed to protect the mobiles well, without using more material than necessary.

As a small family-run company, we do not believe in perfect solutions, but we do believe in continuous improvement. In the idea that small choices, over time, can make a real difference. We also believe in repairing rather than simply replacing. That is why we created our "mobile hospital", where people can send in mobiles that hold special meaning to them. A mobile from a nursery room forty years ago. Another mobile that was inherited from grandparents.

Whenever possible, we help give them new life. Often, we also guide people in repairing their mobiles themselves if they have become tangled or damaged. It takes time, but to us, that time matters. Because when someone wishes to preserve something rather than simply throw it away and buy new, it tells us that the mobile has become more than just an object. The mobile has come to hold a special meaning in their life and within their family — and being part of that is a deeply special feeling to us.

Flensted mobile in a Danish home
Design rooted in Denmark

Danish tradition.

A feeling of lightness. Of movement. Of poetry. Of balance.

Flensted Mobiles is deeply rooted in the Danish design tradition, where function, simplicity, and aesthetics go hand in hand. A tradition that has also given rise to some of Denmark's most iconic design classics over time. For us, design is about creating a feeling.

Our mobiles are created to live alongside people. To hang above a dining table, in a corner filled with morning sunlight, or above a cradle where they slowly dance with the air in the room. They are created to become part of everyday life.

Perhaps that is exactly why we still make them in the same way more than seventy years later. Because we still believe in the handmade. In what is created with time, care, and intention. In what brings a little more balance into the world.

And because we still believe that even the smallest movement can make a difference.
